Your Research Is Not Finished Until It’s Used

Research is a key part of the academic journey, but is it enough to just publish it? True impact goes beyond peer review; it begins when your research is applied in the real world. This post explores the journey from publication to practical use and highlights the importance of applying research for meaningful change.

The Problem

In academia, many believe research is complete once it is published. Yet, researchers seldom ask, “What happens next?”

Most research stalls after publication, missing its chance for real-world application. While papers may be cited, the insights often do not lead to action. For example, studies show that less than 10% of published research is utilized in practice. This disconnect between evidence and action represents a significant issue, especially when innovative findings could address urgent global challenges in health, climate change, education, and more.

The consequences of this inaction can be severe. When research insights remain on library shelves or behind paywalls, potential solutions to pressing problems are lost. We must change this narrative.

The Possibility

When research is crafted with an emphasis on practical use, the results can be remarkable.

Take Dr. Helen Lee from the University of Cambridge. Instead of stopping at her groundbreaking diagnostic technique for HIV, she developed a low-cost, portable testing kit that is now used in over 12 African nations. Her research moved beyond documentation to real-world impact, saving countless lives.

Similarly, Dr. Bryn Roberts, a pharmacologist and data scientist, created SafeMeds, a public tool that alerts users about potential drug interactions and counterfeit medications. This app makes crucial information accessible, empowering users to make safer health decisions.

These examples highlight a proactive approach: these researchers did not just publish their findings; they created solutions that impact everyday lives. This spirit of innovation, reminiscent of Thomas Edison’s relentless work ethic and Nikola Tesla’s creativity, serves as a call to all researchers: embrace your power to turn research into practical tools for change.

The Solution

At the Translational Research Forum, we understand the vital need for researchers to shift their focus from simply achieving publication to maximizing the real-world purpose of their research.

Join us for our upcoming keynote address titled “Your Research Isn’t Finished Until It’s Used.” Engage in panels like “Researchers Who Built Real-World Tools” and hands-on workshops that aim to:

  • Design for Implementation: Learn principles that help turn research into practical applications.

  • Policy Packaging: Discover how to effectively present your findings to influence decision-makers.

By participating in these sessions, you will gain essential skills to ensure your research transitions from an academic exercise to a meaningful impact in society.
